Hato guruma toys are a traditional craft of Nozawa Onsen, Shinshu. They were once made from Akebia vines, which were abundant in the area around Nozawa Onsen village. As the material became scarcer over time and prices rose, however, craftsmen began using rattan vines rather than Akebia. Unfortunately, production of these charming crafts has now ceased.
