Craft Research and Reporting Program

JapanCraft21 conducts research projects and other surveys, and publishes the findings to help more people learn about the current state of traditional Japanese crafts.

Research project

Our research program aims to create the world's first comprehensive online database covering all traditional crafts in Japan. In the first phase (completed December 31, 2023), we surveyed all types of traditional crafts from northern Hokkaido to southern Okinawa, listing approximately 1,000 different crafts. In the second phase (scheduled for completion by the end of 2025; as of August 2025, 80% complete), we are creating websites for each of the approximately 1,000 crafts, featuring photographs, descriptions in Japanese and English, and maps.

Craft World Analysis

1. To what extent has the foundation supporting traditional Japanese crafts shrunk?

We have published an analytical document summarizing the current situation and challenges surrounding traditional Japanese crafts. It examines the decline in the number of artisans, changes in cultural demand, challenges in material supply, and directions for revitalization.
