In Nara, carved wooden masks from gigaku and bugaku performances have been preserved in temples such as Horyuji and Todaiji. Masks used in Kyogen and Noh performances during the Muromachi period have also been carefully preserved. These masks were traditionally carved from natural wood such as cypress. Today, craftsmen continue to use traditional techniques to make masks featured in Nara's traditional noh and bugaku performances.
