静岡挽物の歴史は古く、銘木商の酒井米吉氏が元治元年(1864)、静岡市下石町で挽物業を開業したのが最初と言われています。汎用性の高い技術が特徴です。木の皿、コップ、盆、スプーン、玩具、家具、調度品、文房具、仏具、健康グッズなど、丸みのある木製品のほとんどに、挽物の技術が使われています。自由なデザインが可能で、職人の創意工夫次第で、あらゆる形状を作り出すことができます。

Shizuoka woodturning has a long history, and it is said that the first woodturning business was started in 1864 by a fine wood merchant in Shimoishicho, Shizuoka City, named Sakai Yonekichi. Craftsmen use versatile woodturning techniques to create rounded products such as plates, cups, trays, spoons, toys, furniture, stationery, and Buddhist altar items. Depending on the craftsman's ingenuity and desire to improvise, free design is possible, and virtually any shape can be created.
