Basketmaking is a traditional craft of Tochigi Prefecture. Since the Edo period, shino bamboo grown in the Nasu Highlands has been used to make baskets and other items for farm work. In fact, many farmers performed this craft as a side job. The softness of the bamboo makes the curved parts feel nice to the touch, and the bamboo is light, easy to use, and durable.
