Unlike machine-made umbrellas produced with imported materials, Western-style snake-eye umbrellas from Fukui Prefecture are entirely handmade using local materials and craft techniques. Craftsmen make 24 frames using eyeglass frame techniques, the handle and umbrella head are made using Echizen lacquerware techniques, and the fabric is a reproduction of mixed-weave habutae. Handmade umbrellas are now a rarity, and as one would expect from a handmade product, these yougasa are beautiful, durable, and easy to use. Hokuriku once had approximately 800 umbrella manufacturers, but only one remains.
