Iwayado tansu is a traditional craft of the Iwayado region in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Originating at the end of the 18th century, this style of chest of drawers is made by skilled artisans using high-quality woods such as zelkova and paulownia. Iwayado tansu are known for their precise joinery, heavy lacquering, and ornamental metal fittings, which are handcrafted and often elaborately engraved. The craft was initially developed under the influence of Kiyohira, a Fujiwara family ruler, and further refined in the 1780s by Lord Muramasa Iwaki, who encouraged the creation of chests of drawers with casters and fine lacquered furniture with metal ornamentation.
