Sanuki Ittoubori

Carving traditions in Kotohira-cho, Nakatado-gun, Kagawa Prefecture, are said to have originated in the late Edo period when the Asahisha Shrine of Konpira Daigongen was built through a competition of carpenters from all over the country. During the finishing process, Sanuki Ittobori craftsmen use the marks made by the hammering chisel to create a unified carving.. The harmony between the roughness of the hammering chisel marks and the fineness of the finishing chisel marks is one of this carving tradition’s unique features.
