Koematsu Mokkouhin

Koematsu is the central part of the trunk of a black pine tree that is several hundred years old, and this precious material has been used in woodworking since the Edo period. Kagawa Prefecture’s warm climate and low rainfall have made it a major source of high-quality Koematsu, supporting the development of Koematsu woodworking traditions. It takes more than 20 years for Koematsu to dry naturally because of its high oil content. In addition, relatively few trees can live for 300 years due to pests and other factors. These qualities make Koematsu very special. Crafts made with Koematsu gain a glossy finish over time due to the wood’s oil content, and when held up to the light, the tree rings shine red, creating an appealing sight.
