Bamboo fishing rods used to catch crucian carp are a traditional craft of Hashimoto City, Wakayama Prefecture. The city is located at the foot of Mount Koya, where Koya bamboo (suzutake) is produced and arrow bamboo grows in abundance. The fishing rods are made from three types of bamboo - Koya, arrow, and madake bamboo – which are cut, dried, and stored for several years. Craftsmen then choose the best bamboo pieces to make the fishing rods. Nearly the entire process is performed by hand, and it takes about a year to complete the work.
