The Hakone mountains have some of the best tree species in Japan, and Hakone marquetry craftsmen take advantage of this bounty. They gather pieces of wood of different colors and textures to create items featuring intricate geometric patterns that showcase the natural colors of different types of wood. There are about 60 different patterns, but infinite variations can be created by altering the color scheme and wood selection.
