Iwai Kera

秋田県横手市戸波（となみ）地域で生産されます。「ケラ」は「毛羅」とも書き、「蓑（みの）」のことです。ワラや海草など植物性の原料を使って作られる作業着で、今で言う雨合羽であり、重い物を背負う時の背当ての役目も果たします。「ケラ」の中には色々な種類があり、特別なのは結婚式の時にしか使われない「祝いケラ」です。襟には鶴亀、松竹梅、三三九度の杯が乗った三方などのめでたい模様がつけられます。「スゴモ」という海草を、海のある地方から取り寄せて泥で黒く染めて作られました。襟から3か所、長く白い麻束が垂らされ、「共白髪」になるまで末永く幸せに、との願いが込められています。

A craft tradition in the Tonami area of Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, Kera is workwear made from plant-based materials such as straw and seaweed. These garments can be used as a raincoat or as a back protector when carrying a heavy load. There are many different types of kera, the most special of which is the Iwai Kera, which is only used at weddings. The fabric is made from sugomo, a seaweed dyed black with mud. The collar is decorated with auspicious patterns such as cranes, turtles, pine, bamboo, plum, and a sanbō with a 339 cup on it. Three long white hemp bundles hanging from the collar are filled with wishes for a long and happy life.
