Woodworking is a traditional craft in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Fuchu in Ishioka City was the location of the provincial capital and flourished as the center of Hitachi Province at the end of the Edo period. As a brewing industry developed there, local craftsmen used cedar wood harvested from the prefecture to make brewing and sake barrels as well as waterwheels and other products. Ishioka Fuchu Cedar Crafts is leading the modern revival of these traditional craft techniques.
