The large, simple Japanese umbrellas known as bangasa are said to have been created in an effort to improve on the original slender Janome umbrella and create an umbrella that would be more affordable for common people. A traditional wagasa is made of bamboo with a frame covered in washi paper to make it waterproof. In modern times, wagasa are used mostly as rain umbrellas or to provide sun protection for women wearing a kimono. Buddhist monks and Shinto priests at temples and shrines also use them for ceremonies and traditional festivals. Recently, new uses for wagasa have emerged, such as decorating interiors both in Japan and abroad.
