Camphor woodworking has been certified as a traditional craft by Shizuoka Prefecture and has a long history, as camphor trees - which are known for the beauty of their wood grain as well as their fragrance and insect-repelling properties - grow abundantly throughout Izu. Craftsmen make wooden boxes and other objects from camphor using techniques adopted from Edo joinery traditions, and they finish these pieces using natural lacquer, which highlights the unique colors and grain of the wood.
