Hinuma Zao

Hinuma zao, or fishing rods, are a traditional craft of Ibaraki Prefecture. Hinuma is a brackish eutrophic lake where seawater flows back into the lake at high tide, mixing the fresh water with salt water. Its ecosystem supports more than 60 species of fish, including goby, mullet, carp, crucian carp, eel, smelt, and dace. This abundance has made it a popular fishing spot, and many fishermen prefer the strong and versatile Hinuma fishing rods because a single rod can be used to catch a variety of fish, large and small.
