A traditional craft of Saga Prefecture, Furyu (or demon) masks are elaborately carved from wood such as camphor, paulownia, and cypress and then painted with dramatic expressions. These masks are said to date back to the early Edo period and were traditionally used for folk art performances called Menburyu. In recent years, they have become more common as decorations in homes to ward off evil.
