Gunma is a region where silkworms are raised, so mulberry fields are everywhere. Although mulberry trees are typically low-growing, they are grown tall in this cold region to protect the leaves from frost damage. As a result, their trunks are thick enough for woodworking. Because mulberry wood is hard and has little odor, it is ideal for making tableware. The wood is initially yellow when cut but gradually turns a dark brown. Numata crafts are made from Okutone mulberry trees using traditional potter's wheel techniques. These household items feel pleasant to the touch, have beautiful wood grain, and develop more luster the more they are used.
