Sudare blinds have a long history, appearing in the Man'yoshu (Collection of Poems). As Edo prospered during the Edo period, these blinds were used in samurai residences, shrines, temples, merchant shops, and other places, and the increase in production make the producers of sudare blinds prosperous. Because the timber used for the blinds was transported along the Sumida River, many craftsmen worked in the area that became Taito Ward. Edo sudare blinds are characterized by their use of natural materials such as bamboo, bush clover, gogyo, gama, and reeds.
