Shinshu Tegaki Yuzen

Shinshu Tegaki Yuzen is a hand-painted dyeing tradition from Nagano Prefecture with roots dating back over 400 years to the castle towns of the Matsudaira and Sanada feudal clans. In the early Edo period, cultural exchanges flourished when Nobuyuki Sanada invited skilled dyers, painters, and artisans from Kyoto, enriching local textile arts. This led to the creation of Yuzen, a dyeing method that combines painting-like techniques with intricate design. The process involves meticulous steps, from sketching patterns with dayflower liquid, to applying rice paste resist to preserve fine lines, to carefully hand-painting colors before steaming to set the dyes. Large brushes are used for background dyeing, with advanced shading techniques adding depth and elegance. After repeated washing, organizing, and final touch-ups—including gold and silver accents—the result is a richly detailed fabric that blends artistic expression with centuries-old craftsmanship.
