Shimousa Kumihimo

Japanese Kumihimo, a decorative braiding craft introduced from China during the Nara period alongside Buddhist culture, evolved into a refined art form with techniques unique to Japan. In Sakura City, artisan Michiko Hisada carries on this tradition as the second generation, having trained under her father, Hisamatsu, a prefectural craftsman recognized in 1984. Known for his exceptional skill, Hisamatsu’s techniques live on through Hisada, who has earned multiple awards at craft exhibitions for her elegant and intricate braids.
