Akahada Yaki

赤膚焼とは奈良市五条山一帯の丘陵で作られてきた焼き物。その名前の由来は五条山の別名、赤膚山から来ているとも、赤色に焼ける土の色から来ているとも言われていますが、史料に乏しく、諸説あります。遠州七窯（江戸初頭を代表する大名茶人であった小堀遠州が指導したと伝える七つの窯）の一つです。奈良市の五条山一帯はもともと土の層が薄く、採取する場所によって土の色が変わるといいます。そのため、これといった定義はなく、土の色合いや釉薬、焼き方にこだわらず、あらゆる焼き物を自在に作ってきたのが、赤膚焼の特徴と言えます。

Established first in the 16th century and revived in the 19th, Akahada Yaki is a ceramics practice based in Nara Prefecture. The appearance of Akahada ware is characterised by a milky white colour and a clear glaze. Akahada ware is often decorated with Nara-e paintings featuring scenes from Japanese folktales or songs, this has made Akahada a very popular ceramic style with tourists visiting the Nara area. Today, it is reported that there are between three and six kilns in Nara prefecture still practicing Akahada Yaki.
