Mushiage Yaki

With a 300 year history, Mushiage Yaki was established in Setouchi city, Okayama prefecture, by the Okayama clan. The style can be identified in its use of transparent glaze, made from local pine ash. Although, blue, red and yellow ash-made glazes are also used within the practice. The clay used in the production of Mushiage-ware is predominantly collected in the mountainous region and exhibits viscious, firm and fire-resistant properties. Mushiage Yaki was influenced by the Kyoto style and has been popular for use in tea ceremonies. A significant practitioner of Mushiage Yaki, Kuroi Sensa, has innovated upon the form when he began incorporating inlay techniques to his works.
