Fukumitsu Yaki

Amended translation: Fukumitsu ware was established by Kawamoto Kenji, a disciple of Kawai Kanjiro, a promoter of the Mingei movement. The gentle shapes born from the traditional kick wheel are combined with sharp chamfering (the cutting away of material to create a symmetrical sloping edge). This chamfering is Fukumitsu ware's greatest feature. The kiln also operates as a down-flame climbing kiln. The down-flame method allows the flame to envelop the dish as it is baked, resulting in an even baking on both the front and back. Making use of the contrast between the black iron glaze (black makeup) and the amber glaze, the base is deeply carved, creating a thin yet substantial style. The spirit and technique of Mingei, passed down through the generations, is embodied within this pottery practice.
