A well-known pottery form in the folk craft movement, Ushinoto Yaki is created by the Ushinoto Kiln in Tottori prefecture. Since the end of the Edo period, this five-room climbing kiln has operated. Works of Ushinoto Yaki can be recognised by their use of green, black and white glaze applied in distinctive block colour halves or thirds across an object. Although the practice existed before the Mingei folk craft movement, the kilns were influential within the movement and visited by figures such as Shoya Yoshida, Muneyoshi Yanagi, Bernard Howell Leach and Kanjiro Kawai.
