Engouji Gama

Surrounded by deep green mountains and surrounded by rice paddies, Enkoji Kiln was opened by Yamashita Kiyoshi, who studied under Tanba potter Ikuta Kazutaka, a disciple of Kawai Kanjiro, known as a central member of the Mingei movement that swept Japan at the end of the Taisho period. The pottery places importance on the "beauty of utility" and strives to create works that blend into everyday life and enrich it. The pottery is fired using glazes made from rice husk ash and black mudstone, as well as local clay, and has a natural, subdued texture and color that makes food look beautiful, and its gentle feel when picked up is appealing.
