Made only by hand or by paddle in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Ohi Yaki has been practiced for 350 years. Ohi-ware can be recognised by its use of distinctive amber glazes. Typically, pieces of Ohi-ware are tea utensils, specifically, tea bowls. It is made from relatively soft clay which is hand-moulded and any excess is removed with a spatula. Finding its origins in Rahu Yaki, Ohi Yaki utilises rapid temperature changes throughout the baking process.
