Tsukubane Yaki

Produced in Tsukuba City, Tsukubane Yaki is characterized by a deep, subdued texture with refined shibumi (a quiet elegance). Local clay from Tsukuba is used for the pottery body, while natural ash glazes are made from kaya (Japanese nutmeg-yew), straw, plum, and red pine. Red pine is also used as the fuel within the kilns, creating ceramics rich in regional character. Tsukubane Yaki often takes the form of teacups, flower vases, matcha bowls, and sake bottles. It is recognized as a traditional craft of Ibaraki Prefecture.
