Nunchaku is a type of weapon used in Okinawan Ryukyu kobudō that became widely known around the world through Bruce Lee’s kung fu movies. It consists of two sticks connected together and can be used for various offensive techniques such as striking and thrusting. “Nunchaku” is an Okinawan word, and its origins are thought to lie in Okinawa’s unique culture. In Chinese martial arts there are similar weapons such as the three-section staff and the two-section staff, but one theory holds that Okinawan nunchaku developed from farming tools, embodying the ingenuity of ordinary people who disguised weapons in order to protect themselves.
