Himeji Shunkei

Himeji’s lacquercraft tradition—though not formally called “Shunkei”—thrives in studios like Sunagawa Lacquer Crafts, continuing techniques that have adorned temple fittings, festival floats, and ceremonial objects since the Edo era. Local workshops, including those of Sunagawa and Harada Komyodo, offer immersive encounters with lacquering and gold-leaf methods rooted in the region’s heritage. Characterized by layered urushi, maki-e, and resilient, hand-applied finishes built for both beauty and function, Himeji’s lacquercraft remains a vibrant and evolving art form, respected for both its craftsmanship and cultural significance.
