The kama was both traditional farming implement and weapon in historic Japan. Kama can often be differentiated from a standard rice sickle as the weaponry version has a nook to hold a staff, whereas the standard sickle does not. Brought from other parts of Asia to the Okinawan islands, kama have been incorporated into the martial arts of te and karate. Kama can be wielded separately or in pairs.
