Tokushima has long been a major lumber-producing region, and the advanced woodworking techniques of shipwrights who supported the Awa Domain’s navy during the Edo period have been passed down over time. Making use of the woodworking technique known as mokubari, the Yusan bako (box) is a beautifully painted three-tiered container that children use on outings to the mountains and fields (yusan) or as a lunch box for Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day).
