Noh mask-making is a traditional craft product of Kyoto. As many as 80 different types of masks are used on the Noh stage. They are typically made from cypress wood, which is hammered with a chisel and hand-carved using various types of carving knives. The front of each mask is painted with layers of gofun, a white pigment made from finely ground oyster shells mixed with animal glue, then polished with sandpaper. Eyes, eyebrows, and hair are drawn with ink, and the lips are painted with vermilion or rouge to create dramatic facial expressions. The craft of Noh mask-making requires a variety of skills and techniques, including carving and painting as well as lacquering the back, metalworking the eyes and teeth, and implanting hair.
