Yuki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of eight major producers of paulownia tansu chests in Japan. Although the early chests made at the end of the Muromachi period were made of keyaki wood, paulownia wood was increasingly used after Yuki City became a castle town because of its resistance to fire, moisture, and insects. Paulownia tansu are a popular wedding item, and the trees grow quickly, so it is said that if a paulownia tree is planted at the time of a girl's birth, a chest of drawers will be made for her when she gets married. The skills of paulownia craftsmen, cultivated by tradition, give these chests a unique beauty and dignity.
