Traditional tsugaru kumiko techniques have been used to make building decorations for over 1,300 years, since the Asuka period. Their distinctive feature is that grooves, holes, and tenons are carved into thin cut wood, and linear parts are then combined to create complex three-dimensional geometric shapes. Craftsmen use diverse techniques – including "mebushi honkagome" (basket-like patterns), "honnejigumi" (joining pieces of wood vertically and horizontally), and "kikko kumiko" (combining triangles to create a hexagonal tortoiseshell pattern) - to make an array of products, including indoor decorations, lanterns, partitions, folding screens, and lampshades.
