Karaki furniture-making is a regional craft of Echizen city (formerly Takefu city), Fukui Prefecture, in the Hokuriku-Koshinetsu region. Its history dates back to the mid-Edo period, when Takefu craftsmen adopted Osaka Karaki joinery methods and added their own special techniques over time. Craftsmen use traditional sashimono craft methods (for example, using wooden joinery rather than nails or screws) to make tea shelves, flower stands, folding screens, and other furniture items using local woods such as rosewood and ebony.
