Suruga Wazome is a traditional dyeing craft from Shizuoka, a region with deep roots in Japan’s textile industry. Indigo dyeing, introduced from China during the Asuka period, flourished here during the Imagawa era, supported by local cultivation of the indigo plant and a bustling community of dye artisans. In the Edo period, Shizuoka workshops produced a wide range of goods—from banners and work clothes to celebratory furoshiki—often in rich navy blue. Characterized by striking contrasts between vivid colors and crisp white areas, Suruga Wazome is now a designated local craft of Shizuoka Prefecture. Today, artisans not only preserve these skills but also adapt them to modern lifestyles, creating clothing, interior goods, and accessories, while offering workshops to share the beauty of this enduring art.
