袴
Hakama

武道で使われる袴には、剣道、弓道、合気道、居合道など、それぞれの武道や使われるシーンに合わせた様々な種類があります。袴には相手に足の動きを読み取られないようにする働きがあります。
The hakama (袴) originated as formal attire worn by the samurai class during the Heian period and later became closely associated with martial status and proper conduct. Its pleated design allowed freedom of movement while concealing footwork, an advantage both in combat and in training. As martial arts evolved into codified disciplines, the hakama was retained in practices such as kendo, aikido, and classical schools, where it continues to symbolize tradition, formality, and ethical comportment. Beyond its functional role, the hakama reflects continuity with samurai culture and the values historically associated with martial discipline.
