Ishida Shima

Ishidajima is a traditional striped cotton fabric dyed with natural plant dyes, known for its soft texture, durability, and meticulous handweaving. Once in decline, it has been revived in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, an area rich in textile industries. The production process is highly detailed, spanning several weeks: cotton threads are prepared, plant-dyed through repeated boiling and mordanting, naturally dried, then warped to create the striped design. Finally, the fabric is handwoven, with about half a day needed to produce just one meter. Today, Ishidajima remains a designated local craft of Fukui, valued for both its beauty and heritage craftsmanship.
