Chita Momen is a traditional cotton fabric from Chita, originally produced as plain white woven cloth for everyday clothing like yukata and tenugui. After bleaching techniques were introduced, it became known as “Chita bleached cotton” and gained fame in Edo. Women of farming families played a central role in its production, weaving both white cotton for sale and striped cotton for personal use, with the saying, “those who cannot weave cannot marry.” The craft involves dyeing white cotton thread with natural dyes, manually setting the warp threads on a loom, and weaving by hand. Today, Chita Momen is crafted into items such as masks, drawstring bags, and other handmade goods.
