The gi, or dōgi (着), is the standard training uniform worn across a wide range of Japanese martial arts, including karate, judo, aikido, and kendo-related disciplines. Its modern form emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, influenced by Jigorō Kanō’s efforts to standardize training attire for judo. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese work clothing, the gi was designed to be durable, practical, and capable of withstanding repeated physical movement and contact. Typically made from cotton, it allows freedom of movement while maintaining modesty and uniformity. Over time, the gi became a visual symbol of discipline, humility, and equality within the dojo, minimizing outward distinctions while emphasizing shared commitment to training.
