Okiagari Koboshi

福島県会津若松市で毎年1月10日に開かれる十日市と呼ばれる初市で、縁起物として売られている張り子細工のことをいいます。起き上がり小法師は、実に400年以上もの歴史を持つ会津の伝統的な工芸品です。江戸時代初期に会津藩主が藩士たちの冬の間の内職として作らせ、正月に売り出したのが始まりとされています。3cmほどの手のひらに乗る大きさが特徴で、胴が赤、頭が黒で、目、まゆ、口が細い線で描かれています。その姿がなんともかわいらしく、心をなごませてくれます。家族の数よりも1つ多く買うのが習わしです。家族の安全と発展を祈り、小さな体で元気に働き、転んでも起き上がることを願ったものです。転んでも転んでもすぐに起き上がる様子から、「七転八起」といって古くから縁起物として有名です。

起上り小法師 (Okiagari Koboshi) is a toy made of papier-mâché, designed to right itself when tipped over. Symbolizing resilience and perseverance, the figure is crafted by molding layers of washi paper over a rounded base, then painted with simple features, often re- sembling a small monk. The toy repre- sents the ability to bounce back from adversity and is a popular symbol of good fortune.
