Chigiri-e, the “torn-picture” technique, is a centuries-old Japanese art form that involves crafting images by layering torn pieces of colored washi paper. Originating in the Heian period as embellishments for poetry, it later evolved into an independent visual art akin to watercolor through its use of organic texture and layered translucency. Central to Chigiri-e is the act of hand-tearing, which imparts a natural, expressive quality to each work. While traditional themes focus on nature—flowers, birds, and landscapes—contemporary artists continue to explore new expressive avenues, employing diverse materials and abstract forms. The art combines minimalist materials with depth of expression and remains both culturally resonant and creatively vibrant.
