The terokuro is a traditional Japanese banding wheel, a simple hand-turned stand used in pottery before the widespread adoption of fast-spinning wheels. Made of wood or clay with a flat rotating top, it allows vessels to be slowly turned by hand during coil-building, shaping, or decorating, helping potters maintain symmetry and apply designs evenly. Unlike the continuous potter’s wheel, the terokuro offers controlled, incremental rotation, making it especially useful in Jōmon and Yayoi pottery and still valued in some folk kilns for careful handwork and decoration.
