Izura Tenshin Yaki

The practice of Izura Tenshin Yaki is named after the renowned painter Okakura Tenshin, who had deep ties to Kita-Ibaraki. It is created using local "北茨城蛙目粘土" (Kita-Ibaraki gaerome nendo) clay, which imparts a crisp, sesame-like textured surface that reflects the region’s natural beauty. The pottery is well-suited for heat-resistant tableware such as earthenware pots and pouring vessels. Unique to this area is the "samehada glaze," a special glaze resembling sharkskin, not found in other regions. These qualities express the distinctive traditions and landscape of Kita-Ibaraki through ceramics.
