The Tonbo is an effective but simple solution that enables potters to throw a number of pots with the same depth and width. It’s made of three sticks arranged in a form that resembles the dragonfly, from which it takes its name. The vertical (tail) stick is used to gauge the depth of a piece while the horizontal (wing) sticks gauge width. Obviously you need a set of sticks to accommodate ceramic pieces of different sizes but an individual tail-piece does include a number of holes through which you insert the wing piece. In this way you can alter the height without needing to make a new tonbo.
