Full Armor (Yoroi)

Yoroi (鎧) refers to traditional Japanese full armor worn by samurai from the Heian period (794–1185) through the Sengoku period (1467–1615). Constructed from lacquered iron or leather plates laced together with silk or leather cords, yoroi balanced protection, flexibility, and symbolic display. Armor design conveyed rank, clan affiliation, and battlefield role, making it both functional equipment and a visual expression of social identity. With the decline of large-scale warfare during the Edo period, yoroi gradually shifted from combat use to ceremonial and demonstrative roles. Today, it is preserved as a cultural artifact representing the martial foundations and hierarchical structures of Japan’s warrior tradition.
