Engi Kumade

Kumade are elaborately decorated bamboo rakes that originated in the Edo period from practical agricultural tools into powerful talismans believed to “rake in” wealth, success, and longevity. Sold primarily at the annual Tori-no-Ichi festival in November, these vibrant amulets feature an array of auspicious symbols—from Okame masks and gold coins to cranes and treasure ships—combined in richly ornamental displays. Each purchase is accompanied by a festive ritual, and the tradition of buying incrementally larger kumade each year symbolizes hopes for ever-growing prosperity.
