Hinaga in Mie Prefecture is located at the junction of the Tōkaidō and Ise Kaidō, two major highways during the Edo period. It is said that Hinaga uchiwa fans developed as a souvenir for travelers passing through these routes and for visitors to Ise Shrine. Made from cut simon bamboo, the ribs and handle are one piece, making it sturdy, with 64 ribs woven alternately on the front and back. Hinaga fans are gentle on the hands and easy to use,and are characterized by the soft breeze they can send out, but today there is only one manufacturer.
