Nigiri Game / Chi Ishi

Nigiri game (gripping jars) and chi ishi (stone weights) originate from Okinawan martial culture and predate the formal codification of karate. Adapted from everyday fishing and agricultural tools, these implements were used to develop grip strength, wrist stability, and forearm endurance. Historical accounts describe their use among practitioners who integrated conditioning seamlessly into daily labor. By lifting, carrying, and rotating these objects, martial artists cultivated functional strength directly applicable to weapons handling and unarmed techniques. Their continued use in kobudō preserves the practical, work-derived origins of Okinawan martial training.
